Disc Filter Cake Discharge and Blowback Troubleshooting

Fix cake release by checking blowback timing, air pressure, valve condition, cloth blinding, cake thickness and discharge components on a vacuum disc filter.

Distinguish Weak Blowback from Poor Cake Release

A cake can remain because air does not reach the sector, timing is wrong, the cloth is blinded, the cake is too thin or sticky, or a discharge component is misaligned.

Air path

Pressure, flow or valve restriction

Header pressure alone does not prove air reaches each sector at the required time.

Timing

Sector and valve zone mismatch

Valve condition, disc position and speed influence effective discharge duration.

Cake/media

Sticky cake or poor surface release

Feed, cloth condition, cake thickness and drying affect separation from the medium.

Safety before inspection or maintenance

Stop the equipment and isolate all hazardous energy that can cause rotation, vacuum, pressure, stored mechanical movement, electrical energization or chemical exposure. Follow the site lockout and permit procedure; inspection and maintenance must be performed only by authorized personnel.

Troubleshooting sequence

Trace the Discharge Function from Source to Sector

Change one controlled variable at a time and retain the before-and-after operating evidence.

1

Map symptom

Identify all sectors, one disc or a repeating position.

2

Verify air source

Check approved pressure, flow and moisture condition.

3

Trace valve path

Review timing, passages, seals and blockage.

4

Inspect release

Assess cake thickness, cloth and mechanical contact.

5

Controlled trial

Adjust only within approved settings and track results.

Evidence to record

Build a Trend, Not a Snapshot

Use the same instruments, sampling points and laboratory method so changes can be compared.

PatternAffected discs, sectors, rotational position and frequency.
Compressed airSource pressure, local pressure, flow, dew point or moisture and stability.
Valve and timingDisc speed, discharge zone, valve condition and control sequence.
CakeThickness, moisture, adhesion, cracking and variability.
Media/sectorCloth type, age, blinding, fit, drainage and leakage.
Mechanical dischargeScraper or wire clearance, wear, alignment and contact marks.
Corrective-action logic

Correct the Failed Function, Not Only the Symptom

Excess pressure or aggressive mechanical contact can damage cloth, sectors or ceramic plates. Stay within approved operating limits.

Practical answers

Frequently Asked Questions

These answers support project preparation; the final recommendation depends on the actual duty.

Why is representative slurry data required?
Mineral names do not define filterability. Particle-size distribution, mineralogy, clay, reagents, solids and temperature can change cake formation, permeability and release. Use filterability testing when results matter commercially.
What should be sent for a preliminary review?
Provide dry-solids throughput, feed solids, particle-size data, target cake moisture, operating schedule, elevation and available utilities through the quote request.
Can BOYUN promise cake moisture from the mineral name alone?
No. A defensible target must be tied to representative feed data, test conditions, equipment scope and an agreed operating basis.

Define the Next Engineering Step

Share the feed, throughput, operating target and site constraints. BOYUN will identify missing information and recommend testing, sizing or the appropriate equipment scope.
