Start with the Feed, Product and Water Balance

Tailings dewatering is a circuit decision, not only a filter purchase. The filter must receive a stable feed, return usable filtrate and discharge cake that the conveying and placement system can manage.

Water

Define filtrate reuse quality

Quantify recovery objectives and solids tolerance at the actual plant water balance.

Cake

Design for handling

Moisture alone does not describe stackability; cohesion, consistency and transport behavior also matter.

Variability

Test the difficult feed

Campaign changes, clay and fine fractions can control the required area and technology choice.

Selection boundary

Not every tailings stream is suited to vacuum disc filtration. Poor cake formation, very high clay content or extremely low permeability can make pressure filtration, conditioning or another route more practical.

Engineering sequence

Build the Dewatering Duty Before Selecting the Machine

A defensible selection follows the material through the circuit and keeps every assumption visible.

1

Define water balance

Set the water-return objective and filtrate quality requirements.

2

Stabilize feed

Confirm thickener underflow range, surge capacity and conditioning strategy.

3

Test cake behavior

Measure formation, moisture, release, strength and filtrate solids.

4

Design discharge

Connect filter cake to conveyors, transfer points, storage and placement.

5

Review lifecycle

Include power, cloth, cleaning, labor, wear parts and availability.

Tailings Management Extends Beyond Filtration

Filtration is one element of the facility lifecycle. Owners and designers remain responsible for geotechnical, water, environmental, operational and closure decisions beyond the equipment supply boundary.

Practical answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Use these answers to prepare a useful discussion with BOYUN. Final equipment selection still depends on project data.

Why is representative slurry data required?
Mineral names do not define filterability. Particle-size distribution, mineralogy, clay, reagent chemistry, feed solids and temperature can change cake formation, permeability and release. Use the filterability test process when performance is commercially important.
What information should be sent for a preliminary review?
Provide duty, mineral, dry throughput, feed solids, particle size or P80, target moisture, operating hours, elevation and available utilities through the disc filter quote page.
Does BOYUN guarantee cake moisture from a mineral name?
No. A responsible target must be tied to representative feed data, test conditions and an agreed equipment and operating basis.

Define the Next Engineering Step

Share the slurry, dry throughput, feed solids, particle size and target cake moisture. BOYUN will identify missing data and recommend testing, sizing or a suitable filter configuration.
