Tailings Dewatering Is a Circuit

The appropriate route depends on mineralogy, PSD, clay, chemistry, water balance, site conditions, production schedule, residue-management plan and regulatory requirements.

Upstream

Thickening and conditioning

Stabilize concentration and, where validated, adjust chemistry or flocculation for filtration.

Filtration

Separate filtrate and cake

Select technology and area from representative tests and required operating envelope.

Downstream

Convey, place and manage water

Connect cake behavior to handling and filtrate to storage, treatment or reuse.

Responsibility boundary

BOYUN’s commercial scope must be stated in the project proposal. Tailings facility design, geotechnical stability, placement strategy and regulatory compliance require qualified site-specific specialists and are not implied by supplying a filter.

Circuit sequence

Follow Both Solids and Water

Every transfer, surge and off-spec route affects availability and environmental control.

1

Characterize tailings

Define variability, chemistry and water balance.

2

Prepare feed

Thicken, blend or condition under tested controls.

3

Filter

Produce cake and filtrate at a validated duty.

4

Handle outputs

Convey cake and route filtrate or wash streams.

5

Place and monitor

Operate within the approved site management plan.

Design questions

Inputs Required at Each Interface

Use these questions to expose gaps before layout and procurement.

Thickener/filter interfaceUnderflow solids range, surge time, pumping and recirculation.

Filter dutyDry tonnes per hour, availability, cake and filtrate criteria.
Cake transportConsistency, adhesion, drop points, conveyor slope and surge.
Water returnFlow, suspended solids, storage, off-spec routing and reuse quality.

Technology fit

Where Vacuum Disc Filters Fit

Vacuum disc filters suit continuous duties where the prepared tailings forms a permeable, stable and releasable cake at viable flux.

Suitable candidate

Continuous filterable slurry

Testing demonstrates acceptable area, moisture, filtrate and discharge.

Needs development

Variable or difficult fines

Conditioning, media or operating window requires further testwork.

Consider alternatives

Vacuum response is inadequate

Pressure filtration or another route may better meet the project target.

Practical answers

Frequently Asked Questions

These answers support project preparation; the final recommendation depends on the actual duty.

Why is representative slurry data required?
Mineral names do not define filterability. Particle-size distribution, mineralogy, clay, reagents, solids and temperature can change cake formation, permeability and release. Use filterability testing when results matter commercially.
What should be sent for a preliminary review?
Provide dry-solids throughput, feed solids, particle-size data, target cake moisture, operating schedule, elevation and available utilities through the quote request.
Can BOYUN promise cake moisture from the mineral name alone?
No. A defensible target must be tied to representative feed data, test conditions, equipment scope and an agreed operating basis.

Define the Next Engineering Step

Share the feed, throughput, operating target and site constraints. BOYUN will identify missing information and recommend testing, sizing or the appropriate equipment scope.
