Compare the Same Slurry and Acceptance Criteria

Cloth and ceramic filters can share a disc format while using different filtration mechanisms, cleaning practices and consumable strategies. The slurry—not a general ranking—determines which is more appropriate.

Decision factorCloth-media vacuum disc filterCeramic vacuum disc filter
Filter surfaceReplaceable woven or nonwoven cloth selected for retention, permeability and release.Rigid porous ceramic plates using capillary and vacuum-assisted filtration.
Feed flexibilityBroad media options can adapt to different particle sizes and chemistry.Best for compatible fine feeds that form and release cake on the selected plate.
Consumable strategyCloth is replaced as permeability, damage or release performance declines. No cloth bags; plate condition, permeability, cleaning and damage become central.
CleaningCloth washing and periodic replacement.Backwashing plus appropriate periodic ultrasonic or chemical cleaning.
Cake dischargeBlowback and/or mechanical assistance depending on design.Scraper discharge close to the ceramic surface.
Selection evidenceCloth screening, cake, filtrate and release test.Plate compatibility, capillary performance, cleaning response and release test.
Decision workflow

Test Performance and Maintenance Together

A short test should not ignore the cleaning and operating method required to sustain that result.

1

Characterize feed

Document PSD, mineralogy, chemistry, solids and variation.

2

Define acceptance

Set moisture, throughput, filtrate, cake release and washing criteria.

3

Screen media

Select candidate cloths and ceramic pore structures appropriate to the duty.

4

Test cycles

Measure formation, drying, release, solids retention and cleaning response.

5

Compare lifecycle

Include power, media or plate life, cleaning, labor, spares and lost production.

Practical answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Use these answers to prepare a useful discussion with BOYUN. Final equipment selection still depends on project data.

Why is representative slurry data required?
Mineral names do not define filterability. Particle-size distribution, mineralogy, clay, reagent chemistry, feed solids and temperature can change cake formation, permeability and release. Use the filterability test process when performance is commercially important.
What information should be sent for a preliminary review?
Provide duty, mineral, dry throughput, feed solids, particle size or P80, target moisture, operating hours, elevation and available utilities through the disc filter quote page.
Does BOYUN guarantee cake moisture from a mineral name?
No. A responsible target must be tied to representative feed data, test conditions and an agreed equipment and operating basis.

Define the Next Engineering Step

Share the slurry, dry throughput, feed solids, particle size and target cake moisture. BOYUN will identify missing data and recommend testing, sizing or a suitable filter configuration.
